Rashi (Solomon ben Isaac; Solomon (Salomon) Yitzhak ben Isaac)

Rashi (Solomon ben Isaac; Solomon (Salomon) Yitzhak ben Isaac)
(1040-1105)
French rabbinic scholar. He was born in Troyes. After studying in the Rhineland he returned to Troyes, where he estab-lished a school. He published responsa, composed penitential hymns and wrote commentaries on the Bible and the Talmud. His commentary on the Talmud established the correct text, defined numerous terms, and explained unusual words and phrases. His Bible commentary served as the basis for later interpretations of Scripture. Both works include numerous examples of textual gloss known as laaz' - an explanatory word in French (or another language) transliterated into Hebrew script.
